Skateboard Lessons

with Garden State Adventures

This July 2025, we are proud to launch our “Intro to Skateboarding” lessons at the iconic Red Mill Museum Village in Clinton, NJ!  We are offering group classes for multiple age groups and all ability levels.

Our small group classes are taught by vetted, experienced instructors that prioritize safety, confidence building, and “Mind- Body-Board” movement.  Whether it’s your first drop-in or you’re working on mastering a kickflip, our lessons meet each skater where they’re at.

Garden State Adventures is a charitable LLC with a mission to connect property owners, local guides, and environmentalists so that they can provide experiences resulting in a more Sustainable & Resilient New Jersey.  Our founder is a lifelong Hunterdon County resident with over 20 years of skating experience.  We hope to see you soon!

Meet Our Team

"skateboard instructor"

Ron Gelok III

Founder, Instructor

“Hey there! I’m Ron, the founder of Garden State Adventures.  I’m a lifelong Hunterdon Counuty resident and have been skateboarding for 20+ years! I’ve been instructing since my early twenties and have run multiple skate camps at Baptist Camp Lebanon.

The greatest lessons skateboarding has taught me are resilience and self-discipline. Life hasn’t come easy to me, but skateboarding has taught me how to create goals, overcome obstacles, and envision success.  I hope to see you skating soon!”

"skateboard instructor"

Ben Hyatt

Instructor

“My name is Ben! I’ve been skateboarding since 2010. Ever since I started, I knew I wanted to continue to push myself and continue to learn new tricks. But most importantly, it’s introduced me to some of my best friends, and has taught me some amazing life lessons along the way. I’m excited to share my knowledge with you!”

Zachary Hoyer

Instructor

“Hello my name is Zack! I’ve been skateboarding for the past 13 years all over New Jersey and have been teaching lessons for the last 5 years.

Skateboarding is what helped me view the world differently and give me the confidence I need to succeed in life. My greatest hope is to grow our local skateboarding community 1 lesson at a time. So, with that being said, pick up a board and I’ll see you at the skatepark!”

Each lesson will have a lead instructor who is Wilderness or General First Aid Certified and equipped with emergency protocols should the occasion arise. Our instructor to skater ratio is 6 to 1 and a minimum of 2 adults are present at all times. All staff are criminally background checked and undergo an extensive interview process to join the team. Counselors are experienced skateboarders qualified to provide guidance and support to students.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why skate with us?

At Garden State Adventures, we believe the impact of our program extends far beyond mastering kickflips and backside tailslides. Our lessons are designed to learn how to skateboard and grow in confidence, resilience, and coordination.

Skateboarding, like life, is full of challenges and obstacles to overcome. We emphasize the importance of getting back up after a fall — both literally and figuratively. Our environment encourages safely pushing past limitations and obstacles, fostering a spirit of resilience and perseverance. Through each attempt, fail, and success, skaters learn that resilience is key to achieving their goals, in skateboarding and in life. We celebrate it all!

What should I bring?
  • Required Gear: Skateboard, helmet & closed-toe shoes
  • Reccommended Gear: Pads (knee & elbow), water bottle
What happens if it rains?

Our lessons are rain or shine and our pavilion is covered and enclosed.

Do I need my own Board and Gear

The ideal situation is you use your own board and equipment so your body gets comfortable with what you’ll use regularly. We do have helmets, pads, boards, and equipment available for your lesson upon request.

Do I have to stay with my skater during the lesson?

No.  Please drop off your skater and return at the designated pick up time.

What happens if I'm late for pick up?

Please make every effort to be on time.  An after care fee of $25 per skater is applied in 1/2 hour increments.

What happens if my skater is injured?

Safety is our top priority.

Serious injury is very unlikely in an instructional setting. Helmets are required.  Skaters will be skating on flat ground and small obstacles.  However, board sports, like any other sport, can sometimes involve injuries.

When you register, you will grant permission for staff to administer first aid for minor injuries (i.e. scrapes, cuts, bruises).  In the event of a major injury (i.e. sprain, broken bone), you will be contacted immediately.  Given your proximity to the lesson location, we will wait for you to pick up your skater or transport him/her for immediate medical care (transportation permission also granted with registration).

What happens if my skater is sick/injured and can't participate?

Please do not send a sick/injured skater to a lesson.  While we cannot provide refund, it is possible to “credit” the missed lesson to another date that he/she can participate in.

Do you offer adult lessons?

We’d love to teach any adult interested in skating!  However, for safety reasons, we do not group adults into our advertised group lessons.  If you are older than 18, please contact us directly to set up a lesson by calling/texting 908.797.0710.

What if my child is younger than 7?

Our age groupings are reccomendations.  If you think your child would still benefit from the group lesson, please contact us directly by calling/texting 908.797.0710.
